Young people from the Isle of Wight danced their way to success at a big event in London.
Last Saturday (July 24), students from the MLD studio in Ryde took part in the “So you want to dance” Grand Final in Beckenham, London against other top dance schools from across the UK.
They qualified in a selection of group dances, solos, duets and trios in jazz, lyrical, ballet and street and acro styles, in their Winchester qualifiers in March.
The junior and senior teams went home with trophies, winning in various categories and reaching podiums in almost every dance they entered.
Michelle Davis, who runs the MLD studio, said:
“The dancers trained hard and were thrilled to represent PEI at such a great competition.
“We went to the competition just delighted to have qualified in our first full year of competitions, never expecting to receive such wonderful results.
“It’s more than a great achievement, and I’m so glad the kids have been recognized for the dedication and hard work they give me, week after week.”
Some students also received special prizes at the end of the competition:
- Jess Burfitt for Highest Solo Junior Award – receiving scholarship for Pineapple Dance Studio Summer School
- Alesia Lazar for High Score Teen Solo Winner
- Highest rated senior trio of the day for Rebecca Metcalfe, Loren Hudson and Jess Burfitt
- Best Junior Lyrical Duo for Olivia Sheasby and Poppy Arnold
- Junior Ballet Dancer of the Day, also at Poppy Arnold
“They were incredible achievements against the best dancers in the UK.
“Being from a comparatively small island, giving my students the opportunity to compete in similar competitions across the UK and being able to see what to do, if they see a future in the performing arts industry, so inspire these students.
“We are now ending the summer and starting to compete again in October for the new season.”
